Presenter Bio
Kayla Whaley is a licensed clinical social worker and a Doctor of Social Work candidate in the College of Social Work at the University of Kentucky. She serves as a lecturer in the School of Social Work at San Diego State University, where she also earned her MSW. She also serves as the Director of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility at Daydream MD, promoting inclusive and equitable mental health care. Drawing on critical theory, decolonizing approaches, and an intersectional lens, her scholarship examines how dominant epistemologies in higher education shape the representation and inclusion of marginalized communities. Her work focuses on mental health care disparities, community-based responses to trauma, and participatory action research that centers community expertise. Her recent publication in Advances in Social Work, “Licensure: Client protection or practitioner gatekeeping? Policy and practice recommendations for social work education programs,” explores professional regulation in social work and advocates for systemic shifts within social work education. Her most recent manuscript under review examines the potential harms of social work research through extractive approaches to knowledge production and limited accountability to participants and communities. She is committed to educational equity, as she pursues research and pedagogical approaches that advance reform within social work education and strengthen institutional accountability.
