Holding Harm: Leadership Beyond Compliance. A doctoral capstone on moral injury, ethical leadership, and the limits of social work compliance
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this conference, participants will be able to:
- Name how compliance driven leadership practices contribute to moral injury within social work organizations.
- Understand the difference between individual and systemic responsibility when ethical harm occurs in social work settings.
- Describe leadership practices that shift accountability from individual social workers to relational and organizational responsibility.
Presenter Bio
Eric Morris (they/them/theirs) is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Doctor of Social Work candidate in the Leadership and Administration concentration at the University of Kentucky College of Social Work. They hold a Master of Social Work degree and brings over seven years of clinical mental health experience, in addition to a prior 26-year career in the United States Army.
Their scholarly work focuses on moral injury in social work and helping professions, with particular attention to how organizational structures, leadership practices, and ethical constraint contribute to burnout, distress, and workforce attrition. Their capstone project examines moral injury as a systems-level phenomenon and explores leadership responses that move beyond individualizing solutions toward organizational accountability, ethical sustainability, and agency-centered practice.
Grounded in humanistic, trauma-informed, and anti-oppressive frameworks, Their work emphasizes translating scholarship into leadership practices that reduce harm and support integrity in human service systems. They also serve on the boards of organizations supporting LGBTQ youth experiencing homelessness and poor and working-class communities.

Target Audience: This conference is intended for social workers and students.
Accreditation: University of Kentucky College of Social Work, Provider # 1377, is approved as an ACE provider to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. ACE provider approval period: 9/29/25-9/29/28. Social workers participating in this conference will receive up to 15 general continuing education credits.
