Description

While treatment planning guides clinical action, it remains one of the least theorized components of practice training. Clinicians are frequently taught assessment frameworks and intervention techniques as separate bodies of knowledge, with little explicit instruction on the reasoning that connects the two. This workshop addresses that gap. 

Participants will engage a structured, defensible process for moving from presenting concern to treatment goals, and from goals to intervention selection, while remaining grounded in adequate modalities. The workshop treats treatment planning as an act of clinical reasoning in which theoretical orientation, evidence base, and client epistemology must be held simultaneously. Particular attention is given to questions of fit: How does a clinician account for culture, identity, and client preference without diluting clinical rigor? What does it mean to center client voice in a document that is, by design, clinician-authored? 

Drawing on case material and a guided decision-framework, participants will practice building treatment plans that are theoretically coherent, culturally responsive, and collaboratively developed. This workshop is appropriate for graduate-level clinical students, post-graduate trainees, and supervisors seeking a shared, teachable framework for treatment plan development as distinct from a fixed template to be applied uniformly across clients. 

Learning Outcomes

At the conclusion of this training, you will be able to:

• Analyze a client’s presenting concerns and contextual history to identify clinically salient themes and establish treatment priorities grounded in case conceptualization. 

• Apply a structured decision-making framework to align treatment goals with theoretically and empirically appropriate modalities and interventions. 

• Evaluate the cultural fit, feasibility, and client-centeredness of a treatment plan, and revise that plan collaboratively in response to that evaluation.

University of Kentucky College of Social Work, Provider # 1377, is approved as an ACE provider to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. ACE provider approval period: 9/29/25-9/29/28. Social workers completing this course receive 2.5 clinical continuing education credits.  

Instructor

Dr. Priscila Llamosa 

Dr. Priscila Llamosa is a Visiting Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of Kentucky College of Social Work. She is a mixed-ethnicity, Latiné, cisgender female whose social work practice and supervision frameworks are grounded in social justice and anti-oppressive approaches. Her education includes a Doctor of Social Work from the University of Kentucky, a Master’s of Social Work, and a graduate certificate in Military and Trauma Counseling from East Carolina University, where she was awarded the Maria McMahon Achievement Award by the School of Social Work in 2015. In addition, she is a University of North Carolina Wilmington 2022 Open Pedagogy Faculty Fellow. Dr. Llamosa’s scholarship has led to national and international conferences, workshops, and speaking engagements, multiple publications, including an open-access book titled Handbook for the Recently Admitted: A Practical Guide for University of Kentucky’s Doctor of Social Work Students, which has been adapted by several other departments and universities.
