Description
This session provides social workers with a foundational understanding of disability justice, an intersectional framework that goes beyond accessibility and legal compliance to center the leadership, experiences, and rights of disabled individuals—particularly those from historically marginalized communities. Participants will explore the main components of disability justice. Participants will also learn about resources available to promote disability justice.

At the conclusion of this training, you will be able to:
- Describe what disability justice is.
- Identify components of disability justice.
- Identify strategies that social workers can use to promote disability justice.

University of Kentucky College of Social Work, Provider # 1377, is approved as an ACE provider to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. ACE provider approval period: 9/29/22-9/29/25. Social workers completing this course receive 1 continuing education credit.
Instructor
Dr. Alison Wetmur was born deaf to hearing parents and raised orally. She learned ASL at 23, after graduating from Drew University with a BA in English Literature. After working in the social services sphere, mainly in residential care, Alison obtained her MSW from Rutgers University. Following graduation, Alison went to work at the American School for the Deaf in West Hartford, CT, which is the oldest school for the Deaf in the country. There, she worked intensively with d/Deaf and hard-of-hearing middle and high schoolers with significant behavioral, developmental, or emotional difficulties. Alison returned to Rutgers in 2019 to get her doctorate (DSW). Her clinical and academic interests include deafness, disability, trauma, and mood disorders. She and Dr. Kristel Scoresby recently had two proposals accepted for the International Congress on the Education of the Deaf in Rome, Italy
