Registration deadline: June 19, 2025
Description
Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES) are not unique to just one population and research shows that over fifty percent of adults have experienced at least one adverse childhood experience before the age of 18. These experiences can affect brain development and have lasting developmental impacts, however, there are also positive childhood experiences (PCES) that can buffer these impacts and have beneficial effects. This session will explore adverse childhood experiences, positive childhood experiences and how they interact with the childhood brain. If it is defeating to think that adverse childhood experiences, or trauma, changes the brain, then let us rest in the hope that positive childhood experiences, or healing, can do the same. This session will provide information on ACEs and PCEs and how they impact functioning and development.
Learning Outcomes
At the conclusion of this training, you will be able to:
- Identify the ten categories of adverse childhood experiences (ACES) and their long-term consequences.
- Explain how ACES affect various parts of the brain.
- Demonstrate understanding of positive childhood experiences (PCES) and their long-term benefits.
- Develop a list of PCES to encourage, engage in and reinforce use in their practice.
