Overview

This course covers the basics of LGBTQ+ health ensuring that the participants leave with an understanding of topics that impact the health and wellbeing of this population. Topics include discussions around bias, disparities, stigma, myths, and why LGBTQ+ patients may not disclose their sexual orientation or gender identity. Then the course will go into discussions around how to be an ally and advocate, the importance of taking an affirming history, understanding pronouns, names, and introductions, and the parts of transitioning. The course ends with suggestions for creating an inclusive space.

Delivery Method

This course consists of a recorded video, bibliography, evaluation and posttest.

Learning Outcomes

At the conclusion of this course, you will be able to:
1. Contrast between equality, equity, justice, and reality in terms of health care/health outcomes.
2. Discuss bias, disparities, and stigma and their role in patient care.
3. Explain the importance of names, pronouns, and ways to affirm gender into practice.
4. Describe ways to create an inclusive space.

Accreditation

University of Kentucky College of Social Work, Provider # 1377, is approved as an ACE provider to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. ACE provider approval period: 9/29/22-9/29/25. Social workers completing this course receive 1.0 general continuing education credits.

This course is approved for continuing education by the Kentucky Board of Nursing.

Instructor

Megan Walden has her Master’s in Nursing Administration and has worked as a nurse since 2009. Her work focusing on the health of the LGBTQ+ community started in 2013. She has worked as a Health Educator for Transform Health Clinic at UK HealthCare Turfland since 2016. In 2017 she attended The George Washington University to receive a Graduate Certificate in LGBT Health Policy and Practice. She is passionate about creating spaces for inclusive care. She has taken this training and uses it as a Lecturer in the UK College of Nursing teaching traditional BSN students in Population and Community Health, a Health Equity Internship, and an LGBTQ+ cognate. She is currently training in the simulation lab to create inclusive simulation experiences for students.

 

How to Claim Credit

To receive credit for this course, you must complete the entire course, pass the related posttest, and submit a completed course evaluation. If your score is less than the passing score of 75%, you may retake the test. Your certificate will become available for an automatic download once all of the requirements have been completed.
