This 90-minute session examines intimate partner violence (IPV) and elder abuse as interconnected public health issues shaped by social determinants of health (SDoH), structural inequities, and intersecting identities. Participants will explore how certain factors create barriers to help-seeking behaviors among survivors. 

Drawing from current research on IPV as a social determinant of health, this session highlights the limitations of mainstream interventions and the critical need for culturally sensitive, community-centered approaches. Participants will examine how intersectionality compounds vulnerability to violence and shapes access to resources and support systems. The session emphasizes moving beyond viewing violence as a private matter to understanding it as a public health crisis requiring interdisciplinary responses. 

Learning Outcomes

At the conclusion of this training, you will be able to:

• Analyze how social determinants of health (SDoH) influence vulnerability to intimate partner violence and elder abuse, and create barriers to help-seeking behaviors 

• Apply an intersectional framework to understand how cultural context shape survivors’ experiences of violence and their interactions with systems of support 

• Evaluate the characteristics of culturally sensitive, community-centered interventions for IPV and elder abuse that address survivors’ multiple needs (safety, housing, economic stability, spiritual support) while building trust and enhancing resilience

University of Kentucky College of Social Work, Provider # 1377, is approved as an ACE provider to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. ACE provider approval period: 9/29/25-9/29/28. Social workers completing this course receive 1.5 general continuing education credit.

Dr. Priscila Llamosa and Dr. Patricia Moody Jefferson 

Dr. Jefferson’s bio: Patricia Moody Jefferson is a licensed independent clinical social worker with over 26 years of experience working with children, families, and groups. She holds clinical licensure in Maryland, New Jersey, Georgia, and Virginia and has practiced across these states, as well as in the District of Columbia, Delaware, and Pennsylvania. Previously, she worked at The Progressive Life Center, an African-centered, community-based organization located in Washington, D.C., where she successfully reunited children with their parents. Currently, she serves as a Senior Clinical Social Worker at the Atlanta VA Hospital, assisting veterans in recovering from depression, anxiety, and PTSD through evidence-based therapies, and facilitates a Women’s Wellness Group. Additionally, she teaches at the University of Kentucky’s College of Social Work in the Master of Social Work (MSW) Program. She earned a Doctor of Social Work degree from the University of Kentucky College of Social Work in May 2025. 

 Dr. Llamosa’s bio:  Dr. Priscila Llamosa is a Visiting Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of Kentucky College of Social Work. She is a mixed-ethnicity, Latiné, cisgender female whose social work practice and supervision frameworks are grounded in social justice and anti-oppressive approaches. Her education includes a Doctor of Social Work from the University of Kentucky, a Master’s of Social Work, and a graduate certificate in Military and Trauma Counseling from East Carolina University, where she was awarded the Maria McMahon Achievement Award by the School of Social Work in 2015. In addition, she is a University of North Carolina Wilmington 2022 Open Pedagogy Faculty Fellow. Dr. Llamosa’s scholarship has led to national and international conferences, workshops, and speaking engagements, multiple publications, including an open-access book titled Handbook for the Recently Admitted: A Practical Guide for University of Kentucky’s Doctor of Social Work Students, which has been adapted by several other departments and universities
