Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this conference, participants will be able to:
1. Attendees will be able to understand how to support reducing the mental health stigma for college athletes.
2. Attendees will be able to describe the outside pressures that affect college athletes’ mental health.
3. Attendees will be able to identify common mental health challenges of college athletes.
Presenter Bio
Maya Scarbrough is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the state of South Carolina. Ms. Scarbrough received her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, in May 2021 with a Major in Neuroscience and a minor in Psychology. She then completed her Master of Social Work degree from the University of Kentucky in August 2023. Ms. Scarbrough is currently a Doctoral Candidate at the University of Kentucky, planning to graduate in May 2026.
Ms. Scarbrough opened a private practice called Create Mindful Moments, LLC in Rock Hill, SC, serving children, adolescents, and adults. This practice promotes holistic mental health care utilizing psychotherapy modalities such as play therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, and EMDR. Ms. Scarbrough is hoping to expand her practice to work with athletes after completing her Capstone Project, which is focused on minimizing the stigma related to mental health for college athletes. Ms. Scarbrough would like to create programming for college athletic departments to incorporate with their students to support their mental health and well-being. By combining personal and professional interests, Ms. Scarbrough is determined to make a difference in the future of student athletes by encouraging and supporting an aspect that is often not talked about. By increasing awareness and resources, Ms. Scarbrough is hopeful that mental health will be better understood and supported amongst the athletic community.

Target Audience: This conference is intended for social workers and students.
Accreditation: University of Kentucky College of Social Work, Provider # 1377, is approved as an ACE provider to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. ACE provider approval period: 9/29/25-9/29/28. Social workers participating in this conference will receive up to 15 general continuing education credits.
