Preparing Social Work Students for Healthcare Settings: Closing Curricular Gaps and Building Clinical Confidence

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this conference, participants will be able to:

  1. Examine key gaps in medical social work education in inter-professional role clarity, ethical reasoning, communication, and systems-based practice, as identified through a systematic review of the literature.
  2. Describe the Transformative Medical Social Work Education Framework (TMSWEF) and its application as a theory-informed model for integrating inter-professional competencies into graduate social work curricula.
  3. Assess the outcomes of a Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) intervention guided by TMSWEF, with attention to implications for doctoral-level pedagogy, curriculum design, and workforce preparation in healthcare settings.

Presenter Bio

Ravyn Rooney, LCSW, is a Doctoral Candidate in Social Work at the University of Kentucky and a renal social worker with DaVita Kidney Care. She holds a Master of Social Work from Michigan State University, with a concentration in medical social work, and a Bachelor of Social Work from Northern Michigan University. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with professional experience in healthcare settings serving individuals with chronic and complex medical conditions.

Rooney’s research interests center on social work education, professional identity development, and medical social work. Her doctoral capstone project examines how intentional integration of medical social work content within social work curricula influences generalist students’ awareness, preparedness, and understanding of medical social work roles in interdisciplinary healthcare environments. Grounded in both academic training and practice experience, her work addresses the gap between generalist social work education and the evolving demands of healthcare systems.

Her scholarship emphasizes curriculum design and pedagogical strategies that strengthen preparation for healthcare-based social work practice. Through her capstone research, Rooney aims to contribute to academic and professional discourse on aligning social work education with workforce needs and on expanding recognition of medical social work as a critical component of generalist practice.
