Description

Becoming a foster and/or adoptive parent can present its own unique challenges, especially when the children involved have a complex history of trauma.

The Foster Parent Training Program, housed at the UK College of Social Work Training Resource Center, is offering a virtual training program on healthy brain development. We hope you’ll join us for our upcoming session.

From birth to age 5, a child’s brain develops more than at any other time in life. Early brain development has a lasting impact on a child’s ability to learn and succeed in school and life. The quality of a child’s experiences in the first few years of life – positive or negative – helps shape how their brain develops Having a sound understanding of healthy brain development and ages and stages of child development can help foster parents identify developmental norms and milestones. It can also help families identify appropriate expectations from the individual and highlight areas where additional skills and resources are needed to mitigate trauma relative to abuse and neglect. During this training, parents will learn to address the unique needs of foster youth as:

  • Parents will learn ages and stages of healthy brain development.
  • Parents will learn about developmental milestones.
  • Parents will learn age-appropriate expectations.
  • Parents will learn how trauma affects the developing brain.
  • Parents will learn how to mitigate trauma by implementing strategies to increase resilience, promote growth and have positive outcomes.

Please note this training is approved for 2 credit hours for ongoing, elective training credit for Kentucky foster parents. Although the training is delivered virtually, it fulfills the face-to-face, group setting requirement. A reliable internet connection and computer/smartphone with webcam are required.
