Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this conference, participants will be able to:
- Identify the core components of trauma-informed, multilingual, and culturally responsive SEL frameworks relevant to elementary school settings.
- Understand the key findings from the systematic literature review examining SEL interventions for migrant and linguistically diverse youth.
- Recognize the gaps in current school-based SEL practices related to trauma responsiveness, language justice, and cultural affirmation.
- Explore actionable strategies and implementation tools that support the development of inclusive SEL environments for elementary-aged multilingual learners.
Presenter Bio:
Sylvia Hanson is a licensed clinical social worker and Doctor of Social Work candidate with nearly 30 years of experience in child welfare, trauma-informed care, and behavioral health. She holds a BA from New York University, an MS in Administration from Metropolitan College of New York, and an MSW from Columbia University School of Social Work.
Ms. Hanson currently serves as a school social worker with the NYC Department of Education, providing clinical support and social-emotional assessments for children and families in temporary housing and foster care, including newly arrived migrant populations impacted by systemic inequities. She also delivers evidence-based mental health interventions to children and adults through BCS Group, addressing a wide range of clinical needs via telehealth.
Previously, she held senior leadership roles at NYC Administration for Children’s Services, including Director of Field Operations and Acting Deputy Director, where she led multidisciplinary teams, quality assurance efforts, and interagency responses to complex cases involving child exploitation. She has completed advanced leadership training through Hunter College and specialized clinical training through the Montefiore Child Advocacy Center.
Her clinical expertise includes crisis intervention, CBT, DBT, and trauma-informed practices. Her research interests focus on trauma-informed education, child welfare policy, and mental health interventions for at-risk youth. Her capstone project explores the implementation of multilingual, trauma-responsive SEL frameworks for migrant elementary students and examines strategies for practitioner training and school-based integration.

Accreditation: University of Kentucky College of Social Work, Provider # 1377, is approved as an ACE provider to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. ACE provider approval period: 9/29/25-9/29/28. Social workers participating in this conference will receive up to 15 general continuing education credits.
