Uprooting, Dismantling, and Transforming Masculine Pedagogy in Social Work Education

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this conference, participants will be able to:

  1. Participants will be able to identify how masculine patriarchy is implicitly and explicitly manifested in social work education through curriculum, pedagogy, supervision, and dominant theoretical frameworks.
  2. Participants will learn the elements of a Transformative Pedagogy in developing a non-patriarchal social work pedagogy.
  3. Participants will be able to apply Transformational Pedagogy curricula and strategies to prepare social workers to act as change agents within educational institutions and practice settings.
  4.  Participants will recognize the consequences of implementing and not implementing the Transformational Pedagogy curriculum in patriarchal social work education.

 

Presenter Bio

Ron Columbo is an advanced clinical social worker, part-time instructor at the University of Kentucky, and scholar-practitioner with over forty years of experience in clinical practice, executive leadership, and public systems. Licensed for advanced practice in California and Florida and as an independent practitioner in Kentucky, Ron has worked extensively across residential treatment, substance use services, juvenile justice, family preservation, and maternal and child mental health systems, with particular expertise in program development, quality assurance, and regulatory compliance.

For two decades, Ron served as a Family Court Services Specialist with the Los Angeles Superior Court, conducting mediation, child custody evaluations, child interviews, and expert testimony in complex cases involving domestic violence, high-conflict separation, and LGBTQ+ family systems. Ron has maintained a private clinical practice focused on trauma, substance use, men’s issues, parenting, and relational dynamics, utilizing evidence-based solution-focused interventions. Ron has presented nationally and internationally on his clinical formulation of masculine change, child custody, and domestic violence.

Ron has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy from Stony Brook University and a Master of Social Work degree (MSW) from Barry University. Currently a Doctor of Social Work candidate, Ron’s scholarship critically examines masculine patriarchy in social work education and practice. Drawing on feminist and change theories, and nonpatriarchal knowledge, his work advances a transformative pedagogy that challenges Eurocentric and patriarchal norms in social work education and practice.

Credit Hours: 1.0 (ACE)

Target Audience: This conference is intended for social workers and students.

Accreditation: University of Kentucky College of Social Work, Provider # 1377, is approved as an ACE provider to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. ACE provider approval period: 9/29/25-9/29/28. Social workers participating in this conference will receive up to 15 general continuing education credits.
