The Role of Clinical Social Workers in Supporting Special Education Teachers

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this conference, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify gaps in special education teacher training, professional development, and implementation of trauma-responsive practices throughout the teacher career span.
  2. Explain core principles of attachment theory, polyvagal theory, and play therapy principles as they relate to classroom relationships and self-regulation.
  3. Examine the role of clinical social workers in supporting special education teachers through consultation, collaboration, and capacity-building.

 

Presenter Bio:

Nancy Acevedo is a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) and registered play therapist (RPT™) in Georgia. She is currently a Doctor of Social Work (DSW) candidate at the University of Kentucky. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from Texas Christian University and a Master of Social Work (MSW) from Kennesaw State University.

Nancy has worked in diverse settings, including juvenile detention centers and psychiatric residential treatment facilities for children and adolescents. She currently serves as a school therapist in a self-contained therapeutic educational setting in north Georgia. Nancy was named the Support Staff of the Year for her school during the 2024-2025 school year.

Nancy’s research focuses on supporting the mental health needs of students with emotional and behavioral disorders within the classroom. Through her clinical work and academic research, Nancy strives to bridge the gap between knowledge and practice, transforming classrooms into spaces for learning, growth, and healing.

 

Delivery Method: Live Interactive Training via Zoom Video Conferencing

Credit Hours: 1.0 (ACE)

Target Audience: This conference is intended for social workers and students.

Accreditation: University of Kentucky College of Social Work, Provider # 1377, is approved as an ACE provider to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. ACE provider approval period: 9/29/25-9/29/28. Social workers participating in this conference will receive up to 15 general continuing education credits.

Claiming CE Credit: Instructions for claiming CE credit will be disseminated at the beginning of each session.
