Description

Caring for Professionals: Building Supportive Homeless Service Organizations

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this conference, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify how organizational support influences the well-being of homelessness support professionals.
  2. Understand the theoretical foundation and domains of the Integrated Support Architecture (ISA).
  3. Apply ISA aligned strategies to enhance workforce well-being and service quality.

Presenter Bio:

Homelessness support professionals (HSPs) endure demanding environments in social services, often experiencing trauma exposure, heavy caseloads, administrative burdens, and complex system barriers. These conditions contribute to elevated stress, burnout, and turnover, although research on organizational factors influencing HSP well-being remains underdeveloped. This presentation synthesizes findings from a systematic literature review, a novel theory-driven conceptual framework, and a practical application analysis to demonstrate how organizational support functions as a systems leverage point for strengthening the homeless services workforce.

Grounded in systems theory, complex adaptive systems, organizational support theory, and trauma-informed organizational practice, the presentation introduces the Integrated Support Architecture (ISA). ISA is a comprehensive framework designed to enhance HSP well-being through structural, relational, and cultural supports. The framework positions workforce well-being as a parallel organizational priority to service delivery. It reinforces interdependence, continuous improvement, and cost-effective strategies that can be applied across diverse homeless service settings.

Both formal and informal organizational support are emphasized as collectively contributing to workforce well-being, stability and service quality. The presentation concludes with practical application guidance for leaders and administrators across homeless services contexts. With special attention to public welfare environments, ISA equips organizations to strengthen their support, improve workforce well-being, and elevate service quality across the system.
