Healing Through Touch and Restoring Dignity: Integrating Esthetic-Based Practices into Trauma-Informed Social Work Care
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this conference, participants will be able to:
- Integrate trauma theory, strengths-based practice, person-in-environment, and embodiment frameworks to analyze the theoretical underpinnings of the Trauma-Informed Psycho-Esthetic Model in accordance with CSWE Competency 4: Engage in Practice-Informed Research and Research-Informed Practice.
- In accordance with CSWE Competency 1: Demonstrate Ethical and Professional Behavior, exhibit knowledge of trauma-informed concepts, such as safety, trustworthiness, choice, empowerment, and collaboration, and its moral application to psycho-esthetic therapies.
- In accordance with CSWE Competency 2: Promote Human Rights and Social, Racial, Economic, and Environmental Justice, assess the biopsychosocial and embodied effects of trauma on identity, self-worth, and dignity, as well as how psycho-esthetic practices can support emotional regulation and autonomy among traumatized and marginalized populations.
Presenter Bio
Maci Johnson, BSW, MSW, LMSW, is a Doctoral Candidate at the University of Kentucky and currently serves as Director of Social Work at the South Carolina Department of Mental Health. She earned her Bachelor of Social Work from the University of South Carolina and her Master of Social Work from Savannah State University, where she developed a strong foundation in clinical practice, administration, and social justice–oriented care. The Prevalent Institute is where she earned her Esthetician certification. Ms. Johnson’s professional experience includes leadership in complex care environments serving older adults with severe and persistent mental illness. Her work emphasizes trauma-informed, dignity-centered, and interdisciplinary approaches to treatment, supervision, and program development within institutional and long-term care settings.
Ms. Johnson’s primary research interests focus on integrating social work practice with esthetic and body-based modalities to promote healing, dignity, and restorative care for individuals impacted by trauma, marginalization, and institutionalization. Her doctoral capstone project, Healing Through Touch and Restoring Dignity: Integrating Esthetic-Based Practices into Trauma-Informed Social Work Care, explores the theoretical, empirical, and practical implications of incorporating aesthetic embodiment and touch-based interventions into social work practice.
Ms. Johnson’s scholarly goals include contributing to practice-informed research, advancing innovative models of care, and translating interdisciplinary knowledge into accessible tools for practitioners and organizations. Her work reflects a commitment to ethical practice, equity, and the advancement of holistic, justice-oriented social work.

Accreditation: University of Kentucky College of Social Work, Provider # 1377, is approved as an ACE provider to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. ACE provider approval period: 9/29/25-9/29/28. Social workers participating in this conference will receive up to 15 general continuing education credits.
