Culturally Responsive Education: Equipping Social Work Students for Practice with Immigrant Populations

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this conference, participants will be able to:

  1. Differentiate between traditional cultural competence models and cultural responsiveness frameworks when preparing social work students for practice with immigrant populations.
  2. Analyze the four components of the multi-theoretical framework (Ecological Systems Theory, Relational-Cultural Theory, Intersectionality, and Transformational Learning Theory) and how they collectively support culturally responsive practice with immigrants.
  3. Evaluate how specific curriculum components (assignments, activities, and experiential learning) can be integrated across the social work curriculum to develop cultural responsiveness.
  4. Identify evidence-based pedagogical strategies that center immigrant voices and promote critical self-reflection among social work students.
