Description
Incorporating More Policy Practice into Social Work Education
Social workers are uniquely positioned to influence policy and advocate for systemic change, yet many social work education programs place limited emphasis on policy practice as a core competency. This presentation explores strategies to integrate policy engagement more effectively into social work curricula, preparing future practitioners to navigate legislative processes, advocate for marginalized communities, and contribute to policy development at local, state, and federal levels.
Drawing from research and real-world examples, this presentation highlights the need for social workers to be embedded in policymaking spaces, including congressional offices and government agencies. The discussion will examine innovative models, such as policy fellowships, interdisciplinary coursework, and field placements in legislative settings, to enhance students’ policy competence.
By reinforcing the intersection of social work and policy practice, educators can equip students with the skills needed to advocate for sustainable change, influence social justice initiatives, and address systemic inequities more effectively. This session will provide concrete recommendations for integrating policy practice into social work education, fostering a new generation of policy-savvy social workers committed to meaningful, evidence-based reform.
