Recognizing Compassion Fatigue and Utilizing Self-Care Skills for Caregivers

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this conference, participants will be able to:

  1. Define and recognize compassion fatigue by identifying its key symptoms and causes, and distinguish it from burnout and secondary traumatic stress among informal caregivers.
  2. Examine the impact of compassion fatigue on caregivers’ emotional, physical, and relational well-being, as well as on the quality of care they provide.
  3. Identify practical strategies for prevention and management, including self-care practices, boundary-setting, and social and community supports.

Presenter Bio

Hannah Tibbs, LCSW, is a doctoral candidate in Social Work with an Administrative Leadership concentration. She received her Master’s Degree in Social Work from Western Kentucky University and is pursuing her Doctorate in Social Work at the University of Kentucky. Hannah is a licensed clinical social worker. She owns a private practice that provides trauma-informed, culturally responsive clinical therapy to children, adults, and families. Hannah also works full-time as a dialysis social worker in the medical field. Hannah holds a Nephrology Social Worker Certification (NSW-C) in addition to her LCSW.

Hannah’s doctoral research and clinical interests focus on caregiver burnout, secondary trauma, and sustainable care practices within families and professional caregiving systems. Her work emphasizes resilience, boundary-setting, and systemic interventions that support caregiver well-being and equity. In addition to clinical practice, Hannah is committed to advancing social work research and education that centers on caregiver wellness, burnout prevention, and ethical, compassionate care across settings.

Delivery Method: Live Interactive Training via Zoom Video Conferencing

Credit Hours: 1.0 (ACE)

Target Audience: This conference is intended for social workers and students.

Accreditation: University of Kentucky College of Social Work, Provider # 1377, is approved as an ACE provider to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. ACE provider approval period: 9/29/25-9/29/28. Social workers participating in this conference will receive up to 15 general continuing education credits.
