Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this conference, participants will be able to:

  1. Explore gaps and needs to help address mental health disparities faced by southern rural Black men from an Afrocentric framework.
  2. Explore rural barriers specific to southern rural Black men.
  3. Understand the intersectionality of southern rural Black men and how it impacts mental health outcomes.
  4. Learn how to implement organization-wide cultural humility training tailored to southern rural Black men and ensure a commitment to anti-racism.

Presenter Bio

Gary T. Taylor, also known as Trey, is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), a three-time published author, clinical supervisor, keynote speaker, and an Assistant Professor of Social Work at Virginia State University. At Virginia State University, he currently serves as the MSW Online Program Coordinator, overseeing online programming for social work graduate students. He is a native of Caroline County, Virginia, where he currently resides with his wife and two children. Gary is an alumnus of Virginia Commonwealth University, earning his Bachelor’s of Psychology (2011), and an alumnus of George Mason University, earning his Master’s in Social Work (2015). He is currently is Doctoral candidate in the College of Social Work at the University of Kentucky. With over 11 years of experience in social work across multiple settings, Gary brings a deep commitment to culturally responsive, community-centered practice. His community work centers on Black men’s mental health, non-traditional interventions, and cultural humility. His doctoral capstone research focuses on addressing the mental health barriers of southern rural Black men through an Afrocentric framework. Based on his research, Gary seeks to provide culturally centered trainings for healthcare organizations and community groups, offering education, strategies, and non-traditional interventions to address the mental health needs of southern rural Black men. Beyond academia, Trey consults with businesses, nonprofits, and community agencies on racial equity initiatives, wellness, leadership, and cultural humility. He is also a Deacon and Young Adult Ministry Leader at Oxford Mt. Zion Baptist Church, where he integrates faith, mental wellness, and service.

Target Audience: This conference is intended for social workers and students.

Accreditation: University of Kentucky College of Social Work, Provider # 1377, is approved as an ACE provider to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. ACE provider approval period: 9/29/25-9/29/28. Social workers participating in this conference will receive up to 15 general continuing education credits.
