Description

Digital Storytelling as a Pedagogical Tool in Social Work Education: Evidence to Action

This presentation explores the transformative potential of Digital Storytelling (DST) in preparing social work students for technology-mediated practice. As digital platforms become integral to social work, students must develop digital empathy and communication skills to effectively engage with clients in virtual environments. Drawing on findings from a systematic literature review and a conceptual framework, the presentation highlights how DST fosters critical skills such as empathy, cultural competence, and digital literacy.

The systematic review synthesized recent studies (2018–2024) demonstrating DST’s effectiveness in enhancing student creativity, collaboration, and advocacy skills while addressing challenges such as technological barriers and student apprehension. The conceptual framework builds on experiential learning theory and digital literacy principles, positioning DST as a pedagogical tool that bridges traditional teaching methods with the demands of digital practice.

The Practice Application Paper builds on these findings by offering actionable strategies for integrating DST into social work curricula. This includes addressing implementation challenges, fostering long-term skill development, and preparing students to meet the demands of contemporary digital practice. Attendees will gain insights into the practical applications of DST, research gaps, and its implications for social work education, practice, and policy.
