Upon completion of this conference, participants will be able to:

1. Encourage the audience to analyze the historical and institutional roots of policy invisibility in America and its role in reinforcing power imbalances in collegiate sport
2. Highlight the mental health implications of underarticulated policies through the lens of the marginalized collegiate athlete
3. Propose strategies for increased policy clarity, transparency, and equal inclusivity to better support athlete mental health and wellbeing

 

Presenter Bio:

Carrie Junious is a proud Doctoral Candidate at the University of Kentucky! Her doctoral research investigates the historical origins and contemporary manifestations of policy invisibility within American athletics, with particular attention to its impact on mental health and cultural inclusivity. As a Sport social worker and mental health practitioner, Junious’ professional focus centers on advancing the holistic wellbeing of athletes. Grounded in the belief that athletes are the experts of their own lived experiences, Junious supports collegiate athletes through evidence-based and culturally responsive approaches, including Narrative Therapy, Multicultural Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Person-Centered Therapy, and Strength-Based Therapy. Her continuous scholarly research and applied work across community and collegiate organizations aim to promote optimal mental health and sustainable personal and professional development. Junious earned her Master of Social Work from the University of South Carolina and her bachelor’s degree in psychology, with a minor in sociology, from the illustrious Claflin University. She currently serves as a researcher and consultant, providing guidance and support to Division I athletes across the Big Ten and Southeastern Conference.
