Advancing Culturally Responsive Mental Health Practice: The RISE Framework for African American Women

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this conference, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain the mental health disparities experienced by African American women and analyze how intersecting systems of racism, sexism, and socioeconomic inequity shape these outcomes
  2. Describe the core components and theoretical foundations of the RISE Framework, including its resilience-informed, intersectional, spiritually integrated, and empowerment-based principles.
  3. Apply and evaluate the RISE Framework across clinical, community-based, and supervisory contexts to strengthen culturally responsive, ethical, and equity-oriented social work practice.

Presenter Bio:

Brianna Keitt, MSW, is a doctoral candidate in the Doctor of Social Work (DSW) program at the University of Kentucky College of Social Work. She holds a master’s degree in social work and currently practices as a mental health therapist in hospital-based and acute care settings. Her professional background also includes prior experience in child welfare case management and supervision, which informs her of an interest in ethically grounded, system-oriented, and culturally responsive practice.

Raised in an urban city community, Brianna’s professional commitments are shaped by a deep awareness of structural inequities and their impact on mental health and access to care. She is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, a public service organization with a longstanding commitment to advocacy, social action, and the empowerment of marginalized communities. This affiliation reflects her dedication to leadership, service, and community engagement within and beyond professional practice.

As part of the clinical concentration in the University of Kentucky DSW program, Brianna’s capstone research focuses on addressing mental health disparities among African American
women. Her scholarly interests include intersectionality, empowerment-based practice, spiritually integrated care, and culturally responsive supervision. Her capstone project centers on
the development of the RISE Framework (Resilience-Informed, Intersectional, Spiritually Integrated, Empowerment-Based), a practice-oriented model designed to advance equitable mental health interventions and supervision practices. At the time of this writing, Brianna has no peer-reviewed publications.
