BLOOM: A Love Letter to Black Motherhood — Reimagining Social Work Education for Birth Equity
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this conference, participants will be able to:
- Describe key gaps in social work education identified in the literature related to preparing students and faculty to address racial disparities and promote birth equity for Black women in perinatal care settings.
- Explain the theoretical foundations of the BLOOM framework, including Black feminist theory, reproductive justice, and practice-based evidence, and their relevance to social work pedagogy.
- Examine how social work faculty and training models can move beyond awareness-based approaches toward accountable, equity-centered educational practices in perinatal and birth-related contexts.
Presenter Bio:
Alexandria Young, LCSW, PMH‑C, is a Doctor of Social Work Candidate here at the University of Kentucky. She is the founder and owner of Golden Hour Counseling Co., a private practice specializing in perinatal and maternal mental health. Young’s scholarly and clinical work centers on birth equity and maternal mental health, with a particular focus on addressing structural inequities in perinatal care through trauma‑informed, culturally responsive, and justice‑oriented approaches.
Her capstone project examines the role of social work education in preparing practitioners to address racial disparities in maternal health outcomes and to promote equitable, evidence‑informed perinatal care. As a scholar‑practitioner, Young integrates clinical expertise, policy awareness, and practice‑based evidence to advance maternal mental health practice and interdisciplinary collaboration across medical, behavioral health, and birth worker settings.
