Mental Health Challenges in the Medically Complex Child
with Maddie Herbert MD, MPH
Children with medical complexity comprise a growing population of children in the United States. As a demographic, these children experience complex chronic medical conditions, high levels of health system use, and increased risks of care fragmentation, hospitalization, and childhood mortality. These children may also be at significantly increased risk of neurodevelopmental and mental health conditions, as they often face significant mental health challenges due to the burden of their chronic illnesses.
These children may experience anxiety and depression stemming from frequent hospitalizations, invasive treatments, and the uncertainty of their prognosis. Social isolation is another common challenge, as their medical needs can limit participation in typical childhood activities and peer relationships. Addressing their mental health requires a holistic approach that integrates psychological support with their ongoing medical care.
