Retirement Planning in the National Football League: A Comprehensive Approach to Wellbeing
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this conference, participants will be able to:
- Attendees will understand the health and well-being risks associated with retirement from professional sport and, in particular, retirement from the NFL.
- Attendees will understand how the commodification of athletes contributes to current programming and the continued oppression of NFL players.
- Attendees will be familiar with how a theoretical base of systems theory, radical social work, and Rohrsian tenets can be utilized in understanding and intervening with retiring NFL players.
Presenter Bio
Alli Carton is a Licensed Master Social Worker and Doctorate of Social Work Candidate at the University of Kentucky College of Social Work, residing and practicing in Athens, Georgia. After working for a mentoring nonprofit, Alli received a Bachelor of Social Work from the University of Georgia, where she was the recipient of the Heather C. Wright Memorial Scholarship. Furthering her education, she graduated summa cum laude from University of Pittsburgh as an Edith Baker Integrated Health Fellow.
In addition to the yearlong Edith Baker Fellowship, Alli was a Jewish Healthcare Foundation Death and Dying Fellow. The course work, internships, and fellowships shaped a commitment to promoting wellbeing as a member of an interdisciplinary team. Since obtaining her professional license, Alli has worked in a variety of healthcare roles, including crisis stabilization, acute care, and end of life.
While focused on health and wellbeing across the lifespan, Alli has developed a passion for comprehensive wellbeing programming and education. Throughout the University of Kentucky Doctorate of Social Work program, Alli has focused on the wellbeing of retiring elite level athletes, combing her love of sport and experiences in healthcare. Providing support and education can create lasting impacts, centering the belief in dignity and worth of individuals, families, and communities.

Credit Hours: 1.0 (ACE)
Target Audience: This conference is intended for social workers and students.
Accreditation: University of Kentucky College of Social Work, Provider # 1377, is approved as an ACE provider to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. ACE provider approval period: 9/29/25-9/29/28. Social workers participating in this conference will receive up to 15 general continuing education credits.
