Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this conference, participants will be able to:

  1. Learn about the common challenges experienced by the military population.
  2. Identify at least three barriers service members and veterans report to accessing treatment services.
  3. Understand what the trauma-informed harm reduction approach is and how this can benefit military clients.

Presenter Bio

Eric Chamberlain, an Air Force Veteran with 10 years of service, is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Licensed Independent Social Worker Supervisor, and Licensed Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor. Eric earned both his Bachelor of Social Work and Master of Social Work degrees at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), and is currently a Doctor of Social Work candidate at the University of Kentucky. Eric has over 5 years of social work experience, primarily working with the veteran population, providing support with mental health and substance use challenges. Eric is currently an Agency Field Instructor for the Peer Advisors for Veteran Education (PAVE) program at UNLV, supervising social work practicum students.

Eric’s capstone project focuses on using trauma-informed practice and harm reduction strategies to address co-occurring mental health and substance use challenges with service members and veterans. Eric’s research interests include trauma-informed practice, harm reduction strategies, systems theory, social constructivism, veteran critical theory, military culture, military reintegration challenges, and social justice in military behavioral health.

Eric’s dedication to his career in the Air Force has earned him the Air Force Achievement Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Combat Command Ground Safety Award of Distinction, and Tinker Air Force Base Honor Guard Non-Commissioned Officer of the Year in 2013. Eric’s dedication to serving student veterans in the PAVE program at UNLV earned him Peer Advisor of the Semester in the fall of 2019 and National PAVE Team Leader of the Month in January of 2020.

Credit Hours: 1.0 (ACE)

Target Audience: This conference is intended for social workers and students.

Accreditation: University of Kentucky College of Social Work, Provider # 1377, is approved as an ACE provider to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. ACE provider approval period: 9/29/25-9/29/28. Social workers participating in this conference will receive up to 15 general continuing education credits.
