Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this conference, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify and challenge the normalization of common assumptions about Black women in social work education, such as the expectation of strength, endurance, and emotional self-sufficiency.
  2. Explain how intersecting identities and life experiences influence diverse experiences for Black women.
  3. Explore how social work education shapes students’ perceptions, particularly regarding the unconscious reinforcement of monolithic views about Black women.

 

Presenter Bio:

Tracee Smith, LMSW, is a doctoral candidate at the University of Kentucky College of Social Work, pursuing a Doctor of Social Work (DSW) with a concentration in social work education. She holds a Master of Social Work from Florida International University and a Bachelor of Social Work from Georgia State University.

​With over thirteen years of experience, Ms. Smith serves as a school social worker in Atlanta, Georgia. Her work centers on school social work and social justice, emphasizing support for Black and Brown students through culturally responsive educational approaches.

​Ms. Smith’s research addresses social justice issues and significant gaps in social work education. Her doctoral capstone analyzes how well social work students are prepared to engage with Black women, emphasizing the need to improve curricula, supervision, and professional practice.

​Ms. Smith aspires to become a social work professor focused on student-centered, culturally responsive teaching. Her teaching approach emphasizes helping students learn the profession’s history, values, and techniques while critically reflecting on their positionality and future roles in advancing social justice.

Target Audience: This conference is intended for social workers and students.

Accreditation: University of Kentucky College of Social Work, Provider # 1377, is approved as an ACE provider to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. ACE provider approval period: 9/29/25-9/29/28. Social workers participating in this conference will receive up to 15 general continuing education credits.
