Presenter Bio:

Mallory Marez, LCSW, is a graduate from Eastern New Mexico University with a Bachelor of Social Work and a Master of Social Work from Western New Mexico University. Mallory is a current Doctoral Candidate at the University of Kentucky’s School of Social Work. Mallory currently serves as a Practicum Coordinator and Assistant Professor for master’s level students at New Mexico State University. Mallory currently serves as chair of her university’s Faculty Affairs committee and is a Practicum and Diversity and Social Justice committee member. Mallory is an advocate for practicum students and their ability to access quality practicum agencies and paid practicum. Mallory is a member of CSWE and presented Enhancing Accessibility and Inclusivity in Online Education for Social Work Students at with a colleague at CSWE APM 2025.

As a doctoral candidate, Mallory focuses her research on practicum coordinators and how they can support students with a criminal background. This research looks at the critical work of social work students in practicum and how that work can be impacted by a criminal record. Students with a criminal background bring a wealth of experience and knowledge that can assist them in their work with clients. From a social justice lens, this research will look at marginalization and oppression and how that plays a role for students with a criminal background. This capstone project will provide education to practicum coordinators on the additional support justice-involved students need and how to collaborate with practicum agencies.
