Overview

As defined in KRS 620.020, training on the recognition and prevention of Pediatric Abusive Head Trauma (aka shaken baby syndrome) is mandated for many professionals including certified and licensed social workers and nurses. This course will examine risk factors, etiology, epidemiology, and the pathophysiology of PAHT. Additionally, you will learn strategies for soothing a crying infant and working with families in various capacities as a tool for the prevention of Pediatric Abusive Head Trauma.

Delivery Method

This course consists of an interactive narrated video and text, additional resources, bibliography, evaluation and posttest.

Learning Outcomes

At the conclusion of this course, you will be able to:

1. Summarize abusive head trauma, including definition, etiology, epidemiology, and pathophysiology.
2. Describe the major characteristics of abusive head trauma in children.
3. Identify characteristics within the child, parent, and environment that increase the risk for PAHT.
4. Identify common physical and behavioral indicators of PAHT.
5. Discuss the role of nurses and social workers in the Recognition, Documentation, Reporting and Prevention of child abuse.

Accreditation

University of Kentucky College of Social Work, Provider # 1377, is approved as an ACE provider to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. ACE provider approval period: 9/29/22-9/29/25. Social workers completing this course receive 1.5 general continuing education credits.

This course meets Kentucky requirements for one and a half hours covering the recognition and prevention of pediatric abusive head trauma and is approved by the Kentucky Board of Social Work for 1.8 credit hours. Approval No.: KBSWSP-202322.

This course is also approved for continuing education by the Kentucky Board of Nursing. Provider Number 3-0055; Offering Number 3-0055-12-25-004. Providership will expire December 31st, 2025

Instructor

Dr. Vicki Hensley has over 15 years experience as a pediatric nurse. She earned her BSN, MSN, and PhD from the University of Kentucky in 2000, 2005, and 2015 respectively. She is a board-certified pediatric nurse practitioner. She has worked at the University of Kentucky Children’s Hospital as a pediatric nurse, and at the Family Care Center in Lexington Kentucky as a nurse practitioner. She currently practices at Baby Health Service, Inc. She joined the faculty at the University of Kentucky College of Nursing in 2005 and teaches in the college’s undergraduate nursing program.

How to Claim Credit

To receive credit for this course, you must complete the entire course, pass the related posttest, and submit a completed course evaluation. If your score is less than the passing score of 75%, you may retake the test. Your certificate will become available for an automatic download once all of the requirements have been completed.
