Military service members and veterans often struggle with seeking help and addressing healthcare-related issues and ailments. Usually, the trauma that they face expands beyond that of combat-related trauma that frequently plays significant role in service members and veterans seeking health care. Trauma-informed care is an approach that can be implemented in healthcare settings to aid in improving healthcare provider/patient relationships, better-assessing healthcare needs, understanding potential barriers to treatment, and improving healthcare recommendation follow-through and outcomes. It becomes vital that, when working with service members and veterans, the impact of trauma is often enhanced during the time of service and that this population stands as the most significant risk of complex trauma.

Thus, to provide the highest quality of care, it becomes vital that the whole health of the service members and veterans is considered. Trauma-informed care fosters and atmosphere of respect towards service members and veterans, acknowledging all potential traumas they have experienced and how this has impacted healthcare thus far. One cannot provide impactful treatment for future outcomes without understanding and giving dignity and worth to the individual about the traumatic experiences they have endured in their past.

Learning Objectives:

1. Learning Objective One: Individuals will understand trauma-informed care and why this approach can impact the medical field.
2. Learning Objective Two: Individuals will learn the various traumatic events that can impact military service members and veterans and how these can manifest while serving.
3. Learning Objective Three: Individuals will experience a case example and experience multi-level traumatic experiences and how they can impact one’s attitude towards health care.

Target Audience: This conference is intended for social workers and students.

 

Accreditation: University of Kentucky College of Social Work, Provider # 1377, is approved as an ACE provider to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. ACE provider approval period: 9/29/22-9/29/25. Social workers participating in this conference will receive up to 15 general continuing education credits.
