Description

Course Title: Understanding Pediatric Abusive Head Trauma

Course Description: Pursuant to legislation passed in the 2010 Kentucky General Assembly, training on the recognition and prevention of Pediatric Abusive Head Trauma (aka – shaken baby syndrome) is mandated for many professionals including certified and licensed social workers. The training is intended to assist in preventing Pediatric Abusive Head Trauma by providing information on risk factors, diagnostic indicators and strategies for soothing a crying infant. Additionally, attendees will learn strategies for working with families in various capacities as a tool for the prevention of Pediatric Abusive Head Trauma. Geared for professionals at the basic, intermediate, advanced and clinical levels, this session will allow attendees to be in compliance with the mandated education.

Course Objectives: At the conclusion of this course participants will be able to:

  • Share statistics related to the prevalence of Pediatric Abusive Head Trauma.
  • Define and describe Pediatric Abusive Head Trauma and its associated injuries.
  • Describe the anatomy of the infant head and brain.
  • Explain the range of outcomes for victims of Pediatric Abusive Head Trauma.
  • Identify risk factors associated with Pediatric Abusive Head Trauma.
  • Identify specific strategies for awareness and prevention of Pediatric Abusive Head Trauma.
  • Discuss prevention of sleep related deaths
  • Identify specific strategies for awareness and prevention of Pediatric Abusive Head Trauma when working in clinical and general social work settings

This course is designed for Social Workers, Psychologists, Marriage and Family Therapist, Counselors, and other helping professionals at basic, intermediate, advanced, and clinical levels.

The University of Kentucky College of Social Work, ACE Approval #1377, is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved as ACE providers. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. The UK College of Social Work maintains responsibility for this course. ACE provider approval period 9/29/2019 – 9/29/2022. Social workers completing this course receive 1.5 continuing education credits.

This workshop is also approved for 1.5 continuing education hours by the Kentucky Board of Social Work; the Kentucky Board of Examiners of Psychology; the Kentucky Board of Licensed Professional Counselors; the Ohio Counselor, Social Worker, and Marriage and Family Therapist Board; and the Indiana Behavioral Health and Human Services Licensing Board.

Presenter:

Janna Estep Jordan – For the past fourteen years, Janna Estep Jordan has worked and volunteered in the field of child welfare and domestic violence. In 2006, she began working at Prevent Child Abuse Kentucky. Through her work, Janna has provided over 400 presentations and trainings across the Commonwealth educating on practices used to strengthen Kentucky’s families and children, through curriculums designed to prevent child maltreatment. With ten years of experience as a presenter and trainer, Janna has shared her expertise and knowledge with audiences including coaches and staff within university athletic programs, first responders, social service providers and state leaders. She serves as chair of the Madison County Foster Care Review Board, holds a Bachelor’s of Social Work from Eastern Kentucky University, and Masters of Social Work from the University of Kentucky.
