Greetings foster/adoptive parents and caregivers!
Becoming a foster and/or adoptive parent can present its own unique challenges, especially when the children involved have a complex history of trauma. The Foster Parent Training Program, housed at the UK College of Social Work Training Resource Center, is offering a virtual training program to teach parents how to help their children manage emotions. Parents will learn to use a trauma-sensitive approach to increase their child’s social emotional skills by teaching them how to manage their emotions.
We hope you’ll join us for our upcoming session.
Increasing one’s social-emotional skills is vitally important in managing conflict, navigating relationships, problem solving and self-regulation. Feelings can be hard to understand, especially for children. Managing the emotions behind the feelings can be equally as difficult. This series will help adults and children identify and understand feelings and develop strategies for managing their feelings.
In this training, participants will learn:
- To recognize and understand their feelings and the feelings of their children.
- About the effect the parent’s feelings have on their children.
- To define feelings of comfort and feelings of discomfort.
- To teach children how to manage their feelings.
This training provides families with tools to understand and manage emotions, which helps to increase social emotional skills.

Although the training is delivered virtually, it fulfills the face-to-face, group setting requirement. A reliable internet connection and computer/ smartphone with webcam are required.
