Description

Greetings foster/adoptive parents and caregivers!

Becoming a foster and/or adoptive parent can present unique challenges, especially when the children involved have a complex history of trauma.

The Foster Parent Training Program, housed at the UK TRC, is offering a virtual training series focused on equipping foster/adoptive parents and other caregivers with the information and tools required to meet the needs of these children through a trauma-informed perspective.

We hope you’ll join us for our upcoming session:

Nurturing Parenting: Communicating with Respect

Virtual via Zoom

November 29, 2021

6:30-8:30 PM EST

Up to 2 hours foster parent training credit available

Communicating with respect is a key factor in building healthy relationships. The ability to communicate one’s feelings, opinions and needs is an essential life skill. Speaking is just one of many forms of communication. However, for some, speaking can be exceedingly difficult, especially when dealing with sensitive subjects and challenging situations. When this happens, people may resort to counter-productive tactics such as shutting down or completely avoiding the conversation. Others may tend to disrespectfully dominate the interaction, by not allowing others the chance to speak, be heard or understood.

Although there are various communication styles, one may find it especially difficult to communicate about feelings and other sensitive subjects after trauma. During this session, participants will learn to:

  • Communicate with respect
  • Learn about feelings
  • Learn how to communicate feelings in a healthy way
  • Learn negotiation skills and ways to confront without criticizing

More specifically, families will learn supportive ways to appropriately communicate with children in foster care with respect.

This event has been approved for 2 hours of ongoing, elective training credit for Kentucky foster parents. Though these trainings are delivered virtually, these trainings do fulfill the face-to-face, group setting requirement. A reliable internet connection and computer/ smartphone with webcam are required.
