  • 3:45 PM – Physical Therapy

This is an in-person training session on Saturday, March 16, 2024, participants will have a variety of topics in breakout sessions to allow them the opportunity to attend the training sessions most relevant to the needs of the child in their care. if this option is less relevant to you and the needs of your medically complex child, please check the breakout session page from here for more options.

1 11:00 AM- 11:30 AM Navigating the Medically Complex World with David Giannini MS, LCADC  This brief presentation serves to introduce the annual medically complex training. Attendants will be welcomed, the process of training will be described, and there will be a few minutes for questions concerning processes of daily training.
2 11:45 AM-12:45 PM Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children This presentation will cover issues facing foster parents of deaf and hard of hearing children. Among problems covered will be a focus on care, specific medical needs, modes of communication for these children. 
3 1:00 PM-2:00 PM Palliative Care/Hospice This presentation will cover palliative and hospice care within the foster care system. As many medically complex children are in need of this kind of care in situations with serious illness, Dr. Schaefer will discuss the categories of care and ways to access appropriately for medically complex children. 
4 2:30 PM-3:30 PM Neuromuscular Disease This presentation will focus on neuromuscular disease. The foci of this presentation will be commonality between numerous types of pediatric muscular disease, management options that are disease specific, and to understand the role that caregivers play in care of children with these issues. 
5 3:45 PM-4:45 PM Physical Therapy This session will focus on physical therapy and its positive effects on children who are medically complex. This session will focus on definitions of physical therapy and when it is appropriate and/or necessary for use with children with specific physical issues. 
6 5:00 PM-6:30 PM Medical Traumatic Stress with Tanesha R. Johnson, Ph.D.  This presentation will speak directly to the experiences and needs of patients and families affected by injury and illness. Attendees will learn about pediatric medical traumatic stress and the signs and symptoms to look out for in their loved ones.
