The Wheel of Oppression: Rolling towards Substance Use in Central Appalachia

This presentation is intended for professionals of all levels who have an interest in Appalachian studies. Focusing on the pervasive nature of Central Appalachian substance use, this presentation explores current literature surrounding Central Appalachian substance use, the impacts of colonization on substance use rates within the region, and future implications for rural social work practice.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify historical factors that contributed to an oppressive landscape within Central Appalachia.
  2. Identify how those factors and an oppressed landscape sustain substance use in the region.
  3. Explore implications and apply knowledge to future rural social work practice.

Delivery Method: Live Interactive Training via Zoom Video Conferencing

Credit Hours: 1.5

This course is designed for Social Workers, Psychologists, Marriage and Family Therapist, Counselors, and other helping professionals at basic, intermediate, advanced, and clinical levels.

The University of Kentucky College of Social Work, ACE Approval #1377, is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved as ACE providers. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. The UK College of Social Work maintains responsibility for this course. ACE provider approval period 9/29/2019 – 9/29/2022. Social workers completing this course receive 1.5 continuing education credits.

This workshop is also approved for 1.5 continuing education hours by the Kentucky Board of Social Work; the Kentucky Board of Examiners of Psychology; the Kentucky Board of Licensed Professional Counselors; the Ohio Counselor, Social Worker, and Marriage and Family Therapist Board; and the Indiana Behavioral Health and Human Services Licensing Board.
