Building Social Work Clinical Competence Through Simulation and Feedback in Online Social Work Education

As the need for flexible online learning expands, social work graduate programs are exploring alternative and innovative ways to delivery needed content in the online environment. Creating an effective simulation experience for students who need to acquire clinical competence can be a challenge. Simulation strives to incorporate real world scenarios with critical thinking to foster student learning. Social Work faculty must consider what is best practice for the delivery of feedback during clinical simulation debriefing in online graduate social work education. For the delivery of feedback to be most effective, it must be clear, purposeful, meaningful, and needs to connect to students’ prior knowledge and experience. Technology can assist in the pursuit of effective feedback in simulation and clinical competence. The purpose of this presentation is to discuss the role of feedback in effective simulation experiences to build clinical competence and to describe the Video Commentary Feedback (VCF) method, including instructor training video feedback delivery instructions for Social Work faculty.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:

1. Define the concept of feedback.
2. Describe the role of simulation in online social work education.
3. Compare and contrast written feedback delivery and video commentary feedback.

Delivery Method: Live Interactive Training via Zoom Video Conferencing
