Description

Bolstering Leadership Engagement to Community Coalition Work in Rural Appalachia

Rural Appalachian agency leaders face many challenges in their work. Agencies often are trying to meet client needs while dealing with workforce shortages and funding challenges. Compounding their challenges is that their client populations are of lower educational attainment, live in poverty, and have decreased access to health care.

These issues prevent many agencies from meeting their client’s immediate needs and never allow them to get to the barriers causing health and well-being concerns. This causes communities to struggle as health outcome barriers are not being addressed. Collaboration must occur as these community problems are too substantial for a single agency. To do this, agency leaders must engage in community coalition efforts. To bolster their engagement, they must have a way to explore the potential costs and benefits of investing in a coalition and understand the value their agency brings to the efforts. To assist them in this exploration, a community coalition assessment impact tool has been created to guide them through the various benefits and costs and provide them with an objective way to justify committing resources to community coalitions.

Learning Objectives:

After this presentation participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the benefits of community coalitions in rural areas.
  2. Describe the agency leader’s hesitancy in participating in community coalitions.
  3. Explain how utilizing the community coalition impact assessment tool can benefit agency leaders in determining coalition participation.
