Description

Breaking Beyond the Silo: Redefining School Social Work Leadership for Equity, Voice, and Systemic Change

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this conference, participants will be able to:

  1. Examine how findings from the systematic literature review (2020–2025) illuminate the school social worker role within school leadership structures and its implications for equity and systemic change in K–12 education.
  2. Analyze school social work leadership through key theoretical frameworks, including ecological systems theory, transformational leadership theory, and critical race theory, to understand how the theories support collaborative systems-level leadership.
  3. Apply evidence-based leadership strategies to redefine the school social work role. This will create ways to elevate youth and family voice, strengthen MTSS implementation, and advance equity-driven systemic change. This will also better define the school social worker standard and role.

Presenter Bio:

Christie Peck is a doctoral candidate at the University of Kentucky Doctor of Social Work program, where her scholarship focuses on leadership, equity, voice, and systems transformation in K–12 education. She is a licensed social worker serving as a school social worker with the Williamsport Area School District in Pennsylvania, currently working with middle school and alternative placements. In addition to her school-based role, Peck is the Director at Eckels Peck Family Services.

Peck holds a Master of Social Work from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania and a Bachelor of Social Work from Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania, graduating with honors from both institutions. She is certified as a forensic interviewer, Neurosequential Model of Education Trainer, Mandated Reporter Trainer, HOPE Squad leader, and SAP Coordinator.

Her doctoral capstone, Beyond the Silo: Redefining School Social Work Leadership for Equity, Voice, and Systemic Change, examines how school social workers can move beyond siloed practice to define leadership roles, elevate youth, family, and educator voice, and drive equity-centered systemic change in post-pandemic schools.
